FAQ: How Does a Home Solar Power
System Work?
In the simplest terms, solar (or photovoltaic) cells in the
panels mounted on your roof top (or ground) convert sunlight
into DC electricity. A component called an inverter then
converts this DC current or power into AC Current which is
used to power homes and their electrical appliances. With a
common grid-tied system your system will be connected to
your local utility company. So during the day if your solar
eclectic system produces more power than you require, you
may be able to get credit or sell your excess power back to
your local utility company if you are located in a
state that has a
net metering
program, which most states do. (see list here)
During the night your local utility will provide power
needed for your home when
the solar panel system is dormant. Their are also home solar
power systems (generally more expensive) that come with
battery packages that can store back up power in case of
emergencies or a power failure.
Find and contact a local
solar power installer or contractor
near you for more information about about the
best home solar power system for your needs.
